Celebrating Queerness

I came across a writing prompt recently that was about celebrating one’s queer identity. As a writing prompt, it utterly stumped me. There were no other guidelines, no hints or tips for how to do it. Just write something celebrating your queerness.  I am stuck with that big question: How? How do I write something that shines with positivity about my queer identity when I don’t necessarily feel positive about my queer identity. I don’t feel negative about it either; it’s just a neutral fact of who I am. So I started making a list. I listed the positive things that have come to me through being LGBTQ+: First and foremost, there are my friends; then there’s the sense of freedom I feel from society’s gender constraints; and finally there’s the broader sense of having a community.
